Okay, so like me, you’ve decided to move into the exciting and fast-paced world of cyber Security! But, you don’t know much about it, or more importantly, where to start.

Problem solved! A great (and free) online course called “Introduction to Cyber Security” is a solid starting point.

Here is the video introduction for the course, to give you an idea what you will learn:

Once you’ve completed the course (which takes approximately 3 hours a week for 8 weeks, but less if you are a quick reader), you’d be able to:

  • Explain basic cyber security terminology; have skills for keeping up to date on cyber security issues, and be able to identify information assets.
  • Describe basic authentication mechanisms; have skills to improve their password security, and be aware of alternative authentication methods.
  • Identify main malware types; awareness of different malware propagation methods; and skills for preventing malware infections.
  • Explain basic networking concepts; be aware of network security challenges, and have knowledge of key networking standards.
  • Describe cryptography terminology; be able to use cryptography for email; be aware of applications of cryptography.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of firewalls, virtual private networks and network intrusion detection and prevention technologies.
  • Describe legal and regulatory issues relating to cyber security, and understand how to recover from security failures.
  • Apply basic risk analysis and management techniques.

The course is written in a way that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, so as a starting point, you can’t really ask for much more!

What really sets this course apart from any others is the fact it’s certified by GCHQ in the UK, supported by HM Government, and is also accredited by the Institute of Information Security Professionals (IISP). You can even get points towards membership levels if you wish to join IISP.

But don’t just take my word for it:

“If you want an introduction to the subject that provides an overview, or to improve your own personal information security, it is an excellent course – enjoyable, informative, engaging and authoritative.”

– Tony Morbin, Editor-in-Chief, SC Magazine

From my personal point of view, I found this course to be really inspiring. After finishing it, I was looking for the next course I could do. If you end a course hungry for more knowledge, it can only be a good thing!

Sometimes, when you start looking at all the cyber security related training Courses you can do, it can seem quite daunting. However, I think it’s important to remember this quote (which is also the title of this post):

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”

– Laozi (Philosopher)

That single step could just be your fork in the road, leading you to a new career like me.
