A new, free online MOOC started this week over on Futurelearn. Just in case you have been living under a rock for the past year, I’ll explain…

In May 2018, a new European regulation comes into force, namely the ‘General Data Protection Regulation’. This is going to replace individual EU countries Data Protection Acts under one umbrella. The regulations will also introduce new and wide ranging changes to data protection laws, the most talked about being the ‘right to be forgotten’. In principle, that means you can ask a company what information they hold about you, and in theory, request they delete the data. The idea being that you, the person the data refers to, should have the ultimate say in where your data resides.

And it’s not only relevant for companies holding personal data in the EU… It covers all EU residents, so even companies in the USA or elsewhere need to comply with the various regulations…!

So, onto the training! The course is called “Understanding the General Data Protection Regulation“, and it has been designed by the University of Groningen, Netherlands.

The course provides a broad introduction to the wide sweeping regulations. If your looking for a really granular and in-depth course, this isn’t it.

However, it does give a great starting point for anyone who thinks they should know more about this impending law. People like me. 😁

Have you done the course already?
